The lowdown

Verbier sits on a sunny balcony at around 1,500m above the Val de Bagnes, and it is one of the most famous ski towns in Switzerland. It is the headline resort of the 4 Vallées ski area and has a reputation as a freeride capital: the Xtreme Verbier, the final of the Freeride World Tour, is held on the Bec des Rosses face each year.

The terrain is big and steep, topping out at Mont Fort at around 3,300m, with some of the best lift-served off-piste in the Alps. There is good intermediate skiing too, but the resort really rewards strong skiers.

Verbier is chic and expensive, with a lively après and nightlife scene, and it is a proper mountain town in summer too, with hiking, biking and the Verbier Festival of classical music in July. The Chamonix–Zermatt Haute Route passes through the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Verbier good for beginners?
Beginners can learn here, but Verbier is best suited to confident intermediates and experts. Much of its reputation comes from steep and off-piste terrain, so true beginners may find gentler resorts better value.
Is Verbier expensive?
Yes — it is one of the pricier resorts in the Alps. Staying lower down in Le Châble and riding the gondola up can save money.
How fit do you need to be to ski Verbier?
To enjoy its steep and off-piste terrain you need strong legs, good stamina and solid core strength. Training before you go makes the difference between a few big runs and skiing all day.
