“Ski hard, party harder — the Arlberg does not do things by halves.”
St. Anton am Arlberg is one of the great names in skiing — a serious, snow-sure resort at the heart of the Arlberg, the region often called the cradle of alpine skiing. It anchors the vast Ski Arlberg network, the largest connected ski area in Austria, linking St. Anton with St. Christoph, Lech, Zürs and Warth-Schröcken over hundreds of kilometres of pistes and legendary off-piste terrain.
Its reputation is built on two things: demanding, high-quality skiing — steep faces, long descents and reliable snow — and an après-ski scene that is the stuff of legend, from the slope-side Mooserwirt downwards. This is a winter town first and foremost, and it draws strong skiers who want challenging terrain by day and a lively night to follow.
Summer is quieter but genuinely good, with hiking and mountain biking across the Verwall and Lechtal ranges once the snow clears. It is car-optional thanks to its railway station on the main line through the Arlberg, and while it is not cheap, it offers real value for the scale and quality of the mountains — especially if skiing hard is the whole point of the trip.
Winter (December to April) is the main event — St. Anton is snow-sure and best enjoyed by confident skiers and boarders who want big terrain and a big après scene. High summer (July to September) opens hiking and biking across the surrounding ranges once the lifts and trails reopen. May, June and November are quiet between-season months when much of the resort winds down.
St. Anton sits on the main railway line through the Arlberg, with direct trains from Innsbruck, Zurich and beyond stopping right in the resort — one of the easiest major ski towns to reach car-free. By air, Innsbruck is about an hour away and Zurich roughly two hours by road or rail. Its position on the Arlberg pass makes it a natural stop between Austria and Switzerland.
A basecamp this good deserves legs that can keep up. Our 12-week mountain-fitness plan builds the strength and endurance to make the most of St. Anton am Arlberg — not just survive it.
