Tyrol, Zillertal

“Tyrolean charm, a terrifyingly steep piste, and après that starts at 3pm.”
Mayrhofen is a lively Tyrolean town at the head of the Zillertal, one of Austria's best-known ski valleys. Two gondolas lift you from the town to the Penken and Ahorn ski areas, and the Zillertal Superskipass opens up hundreds of kilometres of pistes across the valley, including the Hintertux Glacier.
The skiing suits intermediates and freestylers, with a well-known snow park on the Penken. It is also home to the Harakiri, often described as the steepest groomed piste in Austria, with a gradient of around 78%. Après is a big part of the appeal, with plenty of bars and a party atmosphere.
Mayrhofen is good value by Alpine standards and easy to reach from Innsbruck. In summer it is a superb hiking base, with trails and huts across the Zillertal Alps.
Winter runs from early December to mid-April, with the Hintertux Glacier nearby offering skiing year-round. Summer (June to September) is excellent for hiking, with huts open across the Zillertal Alps.
Innsbruck airport is about an hour away, with Salzburg and Munich also within reach. By rail, take the main line to Jenbach, then the Zillertalbahn narrow-gauge railway up the valley to Mayrhofen.
A basecamp this good deserves legs that can keep up. Our 12-week mountain-fitness plan builds the strength and endurance to make the most of Mayrhofen — not just survive it.
